Preparing to Fast

Recently, our Pastor called Thelma Baptist Church to take part in a corporate fast. The Fast will take place April 12-14, 2017.

Fasting is a Spiritual pursuit that involves abstaining from food in order to set aside carnal desires and seek God. Below are some simple guidelines for you to consider as you prepare for the fast.

1.     Fasting is to voluntarily abstain from food and/or drink while seeking God

Old Testament word is tsuwm which means to cover the mouth.
New Testament word is nesteuo which means to abstain from food.

2.      The focus of fasting is to feed your spirit (Isaiah 58: 6-9)

3.     Fasting should:

Bring honor to God
Exemplify faith
Be approached with humility (James 4:6; Psalm 35:13)
Have purpose (Isaiah 58:5)
Be done with the right motive (Isaiah 58: 1-3; Matthew 6:16-18)

4.     Some purposes for fasting are:

Draw near to God (Luke 2:37)
Repentance (2 Samuel 12:10-16; Daniel 9: 3-5)
Seek God’s Will (Judges 20:26-28; Esther 4:16)
Petition authority about a matter (Nehemiah 1: 4-10)
Discernment (Esther 4:16)
Protection (2 Chronicles 20:3-4; Esther 5: 1-3)
Grief/Affliction (I Samuel 31: 6, 13)
Deliverance (Esther 4:13-14; Matthew 4:1-11; 17:20,21)
Serve in God’s Work (Nehemiah 1:4; Luke 2: 37-38)
Physical Health (2 Samuel 12:15-16; Daniel 1:12-20

5.     There are three types of fasting:

Total fast with no food and no water (Exodus 34:28)
Normal fast with water and no food (Matthew 4:2-3)
Partial fast by eliminating certain foods from the diet (Daniel 10:3)

6.      Preparation for fast:

Determine the purpose of the fast
Know if God is calling you to fast
Always check your motives (Matthew 6:16-18)
Be very specific about why you are fasting
Fast in secret – if you share that you are fasting, make sure that you share with the right motive
Submit to God’s Authority
Determine the length of time that you will fast
Determine the type of fast – keep in mind the greater the situation, the greater the sacrifice

Special thanks to Margaret Gunter for supplying the above list of guidelines. You will also find printed copies of this list in your listening guide Sunday morning.
